Update 07-19-08: Gramm has subsequently been ousted from the McSame campaign after a week of attempted spin and damage control....
When I first heard of Phil Gramm's elitist utterances [1] of "mental recession" and "we've sort of become a nation of whiners" I bellowed "Let them eat cake!"
So it was with no small satisfaction when Dem strategist Chris Kofinis delivered the political line of the week Friday eve on Countdown [2] when he referred to "Foreclosure Phil [3]" Gramm as coming from the "Marie Antoinette School of Economics".
I find Kofinis' analysis spot-on. This one should be repeated ad-nauseum and put in campaign ads 'til election day! And why is it an A-hole elitist like Gramm can so in-eloquently put foot in mouth and not be lambasted for the elitist swine that he is? (rhetorical question) Obviously it's only candy-assed, latte'-swillin', limo-drivin' Dems who're lambasted by the corporate media-whores for being "ELITIST"...
For the record, here's the full Gramm quote -
"You've heard of mental depression; this is a mental recession [4]," he said, noting that growth has held up at about 1 percent despite all the publicity over losing jobs to India, China, illegal immigration, housing and credit problems and record oil prices. "We may have a recession; we haven't had one yet."
"We have sort of become a nation of whiners," he said. "You just hear this constant whining, complaining about a loss of competitiveness, America in decline" despite a major export boom that is the primary reason that growth continues in the economy, he said.
